You know those dreamy Christmas market in Europe photos where it looks like you have the whole place to yourself? Yeah… that’s not exactly how it goes. 😂    Here’s our top tips for visiting Christmas markets in Europe this winter (learned the hard way) 👇    🎄 Skip weekends — they’re beautiful but packed beyond belief. Weekday evenings hit different (in the best way).    🎄 Big markets = big crowds. Cologne, Vienna, Strasbourg… gorgeous, iconic, worth seeing once — but don’t expect personal space.    🎄 Go smaller for the cozy factor. Underrated towns and cities = way more magic, way less elbow-to-elbow. Helsinki and Tallinn were some of our favorites for relaxed holiday exploring.    🎄 Daylight = better content. Go early or mid-afternoon if you want clean photos or video. Crowds are lighter and you can actually see the stalls you’re filming (vs. 100 heads and a blur of fairy lights).    🎄 Bring cash. Loads of stalls are cash-only or charge extra for card — don’t get caught mug-in-hand with no way to pay.    🎄 That mug isn’t free. Your Glühwein comes with a deposit (Pfand) baked into the price — return the mug for cash back, or keep it as a legit €3 souvenir. No one tells you this and everyone’s confused the first time. 😅    We learned this one the hard way at the Cologne Cathedral market — we rolled up on a Saturday night thinking, “how busy could it be?” Turns out the answer is: shoulder-to-shoulder, can’t-breathe, mulled-wine-acrobatics busy. Budget airlines look cheap until you add baggage, seat selection and airport transfers. Check the final price before hitting book.    🏨 3. Book accommodation with a kitchen. You don’t have to cook every meal, but making breakfast and a few lunches can save you SO much over a week.    🥐 4. Eat your biggest meal at lunch. Some restaurants offer the same quality food for less at lunchtime. Save the fancy dinner for one night instead of every night.    🚇 5. Use public transport. Airport taxis and Ubers add up FAST. Research local trains, buses and airport transfers before you land.    💳 6. Check your card’s foreign transaction fees. A card with low or no foreign transaction fees can save you money on purchases abroad. Always choose to pay in the local currency when given the option..    🎟️ 7. Look for FREE things to do. Walking tours, beaches, hikes, museums on free-entry days and local markets can be just as memorable as expensive excursions.    🧳 8. Pack like you’ve done this before. Check your airline’s baggage allowance and pack accordingly. Those last-minute airport baggage fees are NOT the souvenir you want.    💰 9. Set a daily spending budget. Give yourself a realistic amount for food, activities and extras. You can still splurge — just plan for it!    The goal isn’t to travel cheap at ALL costs.
