What was once an “animal attraction” in the 1960’s now serves as a native species wildlife park run by the State of Florida. All the animals you will find in the park as you wander are native inhabitants of Florida with one exception. Lu the hippo, who was a resident of the park when the State took possession of it was made an honorary citizen of Florida by the Governor , allowing him to live out his days at Homosassa Springs- he’s kind of a celebrity around the park, everyone loves Lu! Make time to take the boat ride into the park, and wander the whole site, it’s worth the 2-3 hours it takes to see it all!
If you find yourself on the Nature Coast of Florida, and you should, Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park should most definitely be on your list! The sign says it all…
But just in case that’s not enough to convince you to go exploring, here’s 15 photos to spark your inspiration!
Enjoy The Scenic Boat Ride Into The Park:
Say Hi To Lu:
Every year the park holds Lu, their most famous resident a birthday party- complete with a cake and festivities! It’s good to be a hippo at Homosassa Springs!
Make Some New Feathered Friends:
The park has a huge variety of adorable avians to observe! Chances are you’ll hear them before you see them!
Check Out The Underwater Observatory:
The “fishbowl” was a hold over attraction from the park’s private industry days. The windows in the observatory are over 50 years old, and the park is currently in the process of raising funds to replace them. Drop that change in the bucket, and help make a change!
And Of Course, Don’t Miss The Manatees:
Wild Manatees visit the springs during the winter months and head back out to the gulf as the weather warms. The park has four residents who hang out year round since they are part of the rehabilitation program. How could you not love those sweet faces!
